FINE ANTIQUE ENGLISH 7 HALL MARKS STERLING COIN HOLDER WATCH FOB DATED 1906. FINE ANTIQUE ENGLISH MAKER MARKED STERLING SILVER 1 COIN HOLDER.
GENTLEMANS WATCH FOB / LADIES CHATELAINE by BERNARD CUZNER. 7 HALL MARKS DATED 1906. This is a quality Antique small sterling silver watch fob / chatelaine coin holder that would be attached to a Gentlemen's watch chain or a ladies Chatelaine; and was a necessary Gentleman's or Ladies' accoutrement, circa 1906. This piece is a coin dispenser to secure the small denomination coins or tokens and have it readily available when boarding the commonly used public transportation used daily in the larger cities such as a streetcar, trolley, subway, or ferry tolls. This Sterling silver coin holder is 1 3/8 in diameter and is 2 long with the ring x 9/16 thick and weighs.
7 oz or 23 grams. The inside of the top is Marked with the BC Hallmark for Bernard Cuzner (registered in 1902), the Anchor mark for Birmingham, the lion for Sterling and the date mark g for 1906. The clamshell coin compartment design has a 3-pronged hinge and resembles a Hunter watch case with the top being spring loaded. Like a watch mechanism, you press in on the top protrusion to release the top cover that springs open; and when closing, again pressing in on the top protrusion, close the cover and then release the button to secure the 2 pieces tightly together. This closing process reduces wear on the release stud.
The coin holder has a spring-loaded plunger with a guilloche engraved pattern and can accommodate several coins. The plunger is hallmarked sterling with the lion mark, and the rim is marked Sterling with the lion mark and the date letter g. This was made to accommodate token coins, but also fits a U. V nickel or Indian head 5 cent coins. There are no dents, damage, or repairs, and appears in fine + condition, with only 2 minuscule, hard to see dints (very tiny dings) on the sides.
This piece dates to 1906. Exceptions include holidays, power outages, and evacuations.
