Modern Sterling Silver Pyx Box / Wafer Box London 2008 Mark William Munson
Modern Sterling Silver Pyx Box / Wafer Box. London 2008 - Mark William Munson.
This is a fine quality, fairly recently made Pyx box or Communion wafer box, which is designed to hold the consecrated'host' or'eucharist. These small round boxes are often found as part of travelling communion sets and are used by priests who are visiting the sick or those too infirm to visit the church themselves. This piece was made by the modern silversmith, Mark Munson, who specialises in crafting ecclesiastical silver wares.
The box carries full U. The pyx is very traditional in form, being round with a prominent hinge to one side that holds the lid in place - the underside has the usual concave base which almost always seen on these boxes. The lid is very lightly engraved with a Christian cross motif and has a small loose ring pull to one side to facilitate the opening of the lid. The inside of the box is gilded, which is not only a sign of quality, but it also serves the practical purpose of protecting the silver against any corrosion caused over time by the contents.
The is a great value piece that deserves to be used for its original purpose - please study the images provided to satisfy yourself as to the condition of the item - if you have any further questions please ask and I'll be happy to oblige.
