This is a fine quality, fairly recently made Pyx box or Communion wafer box, which is designed to hold the consecrated'host' or'eucharist. These small round boxes are often found as part of travelling communion sets and are used by priests who are visiting the sick or those too infirm to visit the church themselves. This piece was made by the modern silversmith, Mark Munson, who specialises in crafting ecclesiastical silver wares.

The box carries full U. The pyx is very traditional in form, being round with a prominent hinge to one side that holds the lid in place - the underside has the usual concave base which almost always seen on these boxes. The lid is very lightly engraved with a Christian cross motif and has a small loose ring pull to one side to facilitate the opening of the lid. The inside of the box is gilded, which is not only a sign of quality, but it also serves the practical purpose of protecting the silver against any corrosion caused over time by the contents.

This is a great value item compared to the new price and you can save nearly 50% off the silversmith's listed price! The box measures 5.5cm across (including the prominent hinge) - it measures approximately 2cm in height and the total unpacked weight is 53.9g. The condition of the item is generally excellent with no real issues to report - there are no dents, splits or repairs to the silver. The lid and hinge work well, opening and closing exactly as they should. Please note; as is often found on these boxes, the lid is not a'tight' fit, but I don't believe it's meant to be as they are often stored in leather pouches which would always prevent the lid from opening.
The gilt interior is intact and as good as the day it was made. The only aspect of the condition worth briefly mentioning is that there is a very minor and very light contact scratch to the lid which cuts slightly across the engraved cross design - this is best seen in picture 2, in the top left quadrant of the cross. Were it not for the fact it bisects the engraving this minor scratch could easily be polished out, but it still could with some careful and detailed polishing if desired.
