1904 Hanau Sterling Silver Sugar Caster Rare Sun Import Mark. A rare and interesting Sterling Silver sugar caster bearing both the German Hanau marks and the London ones.
The original marks are pseudo Hanau silver marks for Karl Kurz of Kesselstadt and date from around 1870 to 1900. Hanau did not have a centralized system of silver hallmarks, so each maker used their own. The sugar casted was imported in 1904 by Singleton Benda & Co. For only that year, imported marks bore the stamp of a sun with a face; as opposed to the sterling silver lion and the silver content mark of 925. Consequently, this makes imported silverware of that date very collectible.
